Online learning has its pluses and minuses. As a recently new dad, I’ve found it to be beneficial in the flexibility it provides. Sometimes I plan to work on a class at a certain time and parenting responsibilities unexpectedly derail that. Luckily, the flexibility allows me to find a different time in the day to get the work done. Another benefit of online learning is to go over things at your own speed. Sometimes in-person lectures move too quickly, as I like to take my time absorbing and reviewing new information. Online allows me to replay things and go over them multiple times for understanding.
Even though I’ve had many online courses and overall enjoy their benefits, there’s still things I can do to improve and make the learning even better. I think the most challenging thing with online courses is a schedule. I try to keep to a schedule, but it doesn’t always work out, and you aren’t held accountable the same way as you would be for a class that is in person and takes attendance. To make the most out of my online classes, I plan to stick to my personal schedule of starting every week with going over each class’s new material at the same times every Monday. Once I’ve been introduced to what the week looks like for each class I can make a plan to divide up my time for the remainder of the week based on the level of commitment each class needs and when different due dates are scheduled.
